Why you should quit smoking before surgery…

Smoking can be detrimental to health in ways that go beyond disease. One example: it affects how the body handles surgery. For this reason, some doctors are even refusing to operate on smokers to help prevent complications. While not all doctors go that far, others ask patients to stop, or at least reduce smoking cigarettes before and after a surgical procedure. The request makes sense, because quitting even one or two days before surgery—and staying smoke-free afterward—reduces the risk of some complications and helps the body heal better and faster post-operation. Tobacco is a social justice issue

Tobacco is not an equal opportunity killer. For decades, African Americans, low-income neighborhoods, LGBTQ communities and those with mental illness have been disproportionately affected by tobacco use—a result of profiling by the tobacco industry. A new truth® campaign called #STOPPROFILING shines a light on how the tobacco industry deliberately singles out communities that already face adversity and inequality with aggressive marketing tactics that equal profiling. Is vaping the lesser of two evils compared to smoking or just a newer, shinier health threat?
To some public health experts who've seen adult smokers hooked on tobacco despite its death toll from cancer and heart disease, e-cigarettes have the potential to reduce harm by helping them quit.
