Schools Struggle With Vaping Explosion

The student had been caught vaping in school three times before he sat in the vice principal’s office at Cape Elizabeth High School in Maine this winter and shamefacedly admitted what by then was obvious.

“I can’t stop,” he told the vice principal, Nate Carpenter.

So Mr. Carpenter asked the school nurse about getting the teenager nicotine gum or a patch, to help him get through the school day without violating the rules prohibiting vaping.

FDA Begins Push to Cut Addictive Nicotine in Cigarettes

Federal health officials take first step to drastically cut nicotine levels in cigarettes.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials took the first step Thursday to slash levels of addictive nicotine in cigarettes, an unprecedented move designed to help smokers quit and prevent future generations from getting hooked.

The Food and Drug Administration floated the proposal last summer, but provided new details in a government filing on the potential impact of drastically cutting nicotine from cigarettes, by as much as 80 percent.

Cigarette Smoking During Pregnancy: United States, 2016

  • In 2016, 7.2% of women who gave birth smoked cigarettes during pregnancy.
  • Prevalence of smoking during pregnancy was highest for women aged 20–24 (10.7%), followed by women aged 15–19 (8.5%) and 25–29 (8.2%).
  • Non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native women had the highest prevalence of smoking during pregnancy (16.7%); non-Hispanic Asian women had the lowest (0.6%).
  • The prevalence of smoking during pregnancy was highest among women with a completed high school education (12.2%), and second-highest among women with less than a high school education (11.7%).
Figure 1 is a map showing the prevalence of cigarette smoking during pregnancy for each state and District of Columbia for 2016 compared with the national prevalence. Learn more......
